and about this website...
This website has been established as an 'unoffocial' website by two bus pass holders (Barrie & John, based in North East England) with the objective of providing information and a voice for bus pass users. In general we feel that the extension of bus pass facilities in 2008 for the over 60s and disabled people is very welcome, but there are inevitably issues which users will wish to raise. We hope for input from users of bus passes to this website, and where common threads of problems and ideas arise, we'll take the issues up with the authorities. A browse of our 'In the news' topics show some of the issues which are arising.
Since 1st April 2009 there are in effect 3 National Schemes in operation for England, Scotland & Wales. In Scotland and Wales there were schemes in operation prior to 1 April 2008 which allow use of bus passes throughout Wales for Bus Pass holders in Wales, and throughout Scotland for Bus Pass holders in Scotland. But as far as we can see there will be no entitlement to use e.g. an English National Bus Pass in Wales or Scotland. e.g.:
"The Welsh Assembly Government provides financial support to enable local authorities in Wales to provide free travel on registered local bus services for residents of Wales aged over 60 years and disabled of any age"
"The scheme is for anyone over the age of 60, or who is disabled, and lives in Scotland."
i.e. the schemes in Scotland or Wales are for residents of those countries. Surely the next step along the road must be for bus passes issued in England, Scotland and Wales to be recognised throughout the United Kingdom. Those living along the borders between the 3 countries will have a particular interest in this, but it will be of potential interest to all bus pass holders.
